Microbial Etiology of Pneumonia: Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Resistance Patterns

چکیده
Globally, pneumonia is a serious public health concern and a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Despite advances in antimicrobial therapies, microbiological diagnostic tests and prevention measures, pneumonia remains the main cause of death from infectious disease in the world. An important reason for the increased global mortality is the impact of pneumonia on chronic diseases, along with the increasing age of the population and the virulence factors of the causative microorganism. The increasing number of multidrug-resistant bacteria, difficult-to-treat microorganisms, and the emergence of new pathogens are a major problem for clinicians when deciding antimicrobial therapy. A key factor for managing and effectively guiding appropriate antimicrobial therapy is an understanding of the role of the different causative microorganisms in the etiology of pneumonia, since it has been shown that the adequacy of initial antimicrobial therapy is a key factor for prognosis in pneumonia. Furthermore, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapies are sometimes given until microbiological results are available and de-escalation cannot be performed quickly. This review provides an overview of microbial etiology, resistance patterns, epidemiology and microbial diagnosis of pneumonia.

This study evaluated the nasopharyngeal microbial flora and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the one hundred and thirty Holstein calves with dairy calf pneumonia from dairy farms of Mashhad Suburb between September 2002 and August 2003 . The most common micro-organisms isolated were Pasteurella multocida 80 (61.54%), Mannheimia haemolytica 41 (31.54%), Bacillus sp. 15 (11.54%), Staphy...

Microbiological analysis allows us to identify the etiology of pneumonia and its in vitro susceptibility pattern. Antibiotic treatment directed against a known pathogen enables us to narrow antibacterial spectrum of action, and to reduce costs, drug adverse effects risk and antibiotic resistance. However it is unnecessary to perform extended microbiological studies in all patients with communit...

BACKGROUND The burden of acute respiratory infections (ARI) among Moroccan children remains significant. However, scarce information is available regarding trends in its epidemiology and etiology, or regarding its associated prognostic factors. The purpose of this work was to review available data on the burden of ARI among children under five years of age in Morocco. METHODS A systematic rev...

Background and Objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the most common infectious diseases with different microbial agent and antimicrobial resistant pattern in hospitalized patients and outpatients. In order to assess the adequacy of therapy, knowledge of prevalence and resistance pattern of the bacteria is necessary. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and ...
